Fence cost by length

Fence pricing is usually quoted per linear foot, which is useful for comparing materials and not much use for knowing what you will actually spend. This page turns those per-foot rates into whole-project numbers for the four run lengths homeowners ask about most: 50, 100, 150 and 200 feet.

The installed figures are the national-average range for each style multiplied by the length of the run, and the smaller figure under each one is the same specification as materials only. Every number below covers fence alone: gates, permits and clearing an old fence are separate, and the gate table further down shows what one walk gate adds.

Installed and material-only totals by run length

Ranges reflect the spread between a builder-grade specification and a premium one, not a quote. Prices are national averages, and regional labor is the single biggest reason your own numbers will differ.

What one walk gate adds

Almost every fence needs at least one way through it. A gate costs more per foot than fence line does, because it needs a heavier post on each side, a braced frame and hinges that will not sag.

What these numbers include

Each figure assumes the materials that style actually needs: 4x4 posts set in concrete on 8 ft centers for wood privacy, pre-assembled panels and routed posts for vinyl, aluminum and composite, and line posts, top rail, fabric and tension wire for chain link. Braces at corners and ends, fasteners, post caps and the concrete for every hole are all inside the number, because those are the lines that make a quote come in higher than expected.

Outside the number: a building permit, hauling away an existing fence, excavation through rock or tree roots, and any grading needed to make the run level. Those are the four extras most likely to appear on a real bid.

Why a real quote moves

Regional labor rates swing a fence bill more than materials do, which is why the same 150 ft fence can differ by thousands between two states. On top of that: material grade, whether the run is level or sloped enough to need stepping, how deep posts have to go to reach below the frost line, rocky soil, spring pricing season, and access for a truck and wheelbarrow. A corner lot with four turns costs more than an open straight run of the same length, because every corner needs a braced terminal post.

Budget at the top of a range, then price your own run with your local supplier and labor rates before committing. That is what the calculator is for.

Common questions

How much does a 150 foot fence cost?
At national averages, 150 feet of wood privacy fence installed runs about $4,500 to $9,000. Chain link lands around $2,400 to $4,500, vinyl about $4,800 to $9,000, and composite about $6,750 to $12,750. Material-only pricing for the same runs is roughly 40 to 50 percent lower because you are supplying the labor.
How many posts and pickets does a 100 foot fence need?
A 6 ft wood privacy fence with posts every 8 feet comes to about 14 posts, 39 rails and more than 215 pickets per 100 feet, plus two bags of concrete per post. The calculator counts all of it from the run you draw, including corners and gate openings.
Should I budget above the estimate?
Yes. Plan at the top of the range and treat anything less as margin. The estimate covers fence materials and standard installation, while permits, gate hardware, hauling away an old fence and digging through rock all sit outside it.
